A NOSTALGIC HIP HOP JOURNEY
They Reminisce is a body of work exploring my African American culture through music, specifically Hip Hop, R&B, and Soul. Through textured abstracts and collage, I have been able to capture why I fell in love with Hip Hop and what the movement, songs, artists, and the culture of Hip Hop means to me.
Hip Hop is not just a genre anymore. It has evolved into so much more to represent a people, a culture, and a mindset. Assembling and gathering CDs truly became a collection of historic objects that are representative of our culture. Objects become memories, history, moments of transformed nostalgia, and documentation.
The contrasting textured caulk creatives became statement pieces for me because of their "Black" and "White" representation and significance to my ethnicity.
For me, to take care of and assemble these objects is to reminisce, and to blend them is to cherish and preserve them for the culture.
