A NOSTALGIC HIP HOP JOURNEY
They Reminisce is a body of work exploring Nicole Durham’s African American culture through music, specifically Hip Hop, R&B, and Soul. Through textured abstracts and collages, Durham is able to capture why she fell in love with Hip Hop and what the movement, songs, artists, and the culture of Hip Hop means to her.
Hip Hop is not just a genre anymore. It has evolved into so much more to represent a people, a culture, and a mindset. Assembling and gathering CDs became a collection of historic objects that are representative of Durham’s culture.
Objects become memories, history, moments of transformed nostalgia, and documentation.
The contrasting textured caulk creatives became statement pieces for Durham because of her "Black" and "White" representation and significance to her ethnicity.
For Durham, to take care of and assemble these objects is to reminisce and to blend them is to cherish and preserve them for the culture.
